Release v5.85 contains:
-
Email and Notification Improvements: Removal of email impersonation and updates to email footer content for better security compliance.
-
Data Quality and Field Validation: Extensive checks and queries to ensure accuracy and consistency for person-related fields (e.g., Date of Birth, Sex, Family Name, Given Name).
-
Technical Maintenance and Error Handling: Enhanced back-end session handling and system stability.
Important note – Email Impersonation
As part of our commitment to security and compliance, we are updating our email impersonation functionality to align with new authentication standards set by major email providers.
What is Changing?
Email impersonation – a legacy SRS capability – has allowed automated emails and notifications to appear as if sent from a user’s business address or domain, while they were actually dispatched by SRS. While this increased the authenticity of communications, it now presents significant security risks and compliance concerns.
Why Are These Changes Needed?
The ability to impersonate email addresses has become a vector for phishing and spoofing attacks, posing a serious cybersecurity risk for organisations. Our updates are designed to:
-
Enhance protection against malicious email threats.
-
Safeguard organisational data and reputation.
-
Maintain the deliverability and trustworthiness of SRS communications.
Summary of Updates
-
The option to customise the “Email from” field will be removed from:
-
Admin → Template “Contact – Email” types
-
Scheduled tasks for “Report” or “email-notifications”
-
eContact notes
-
-
Emails from these modules will now be sent from an official Infoxchange domain ([email protected]).
-
A new email footer will clearly indicate when emails originate from an unmonitored Infoxchange email address.
-
For “Contact – Email” templates, the “Reply-to” address will continue to use the previous “Email from” value, ensuring recipients can respond directly to you.
-
When applicable, the new footer will also indicate if the email is being sent on behalf of the “reply-to” customer to maintain clarity for recipients.
Understanding the Risks of Email Impersonation
Permitting email impersonation allows attackers to send deceptive emails that appear to originate from trusted sources within your organisation. This elevates the risk of:
-
Phishing and social engineering incidents
-
Brand damage and reputational loss
-
Security errors and authentication failures with modern standards (SPF, DKIM, DMARC)
-
Data breaches and regulatory non-compliance
Implementing these changes will help reduce these vulnerabilities and ensure your organisation remains secure and compliant.
